Adequate consumption of high-quality dietary protein is necessary for optimal human health. The food system is stressed by the demands of a rapidly growing population to provide sustainably produced, high-quality protein that can be accessed by all. The number of people aged 65 years or older worldwide is projected to double by 2050, which some experts argue creates an even higher demand for high-quality dietary protein. Whereas a shift toward plant-based protein sources may improve some environmental metrics, it could also threaten nutritional security in vulnerable populations, such as the young, elderly, and pregnant/lactating women, and detrimentally affect socioeconomic parameters associated with animal source foods, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Precise and accurate determination of protein quality is of the utmost importance in developing sustainable eating patterns meant to nourish the world.
Goals for this program
Foster a comprehensive understanding of the importance of protein quality in sustainable eating patterns and how the application of the Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score (DIAAS) method of determining protein quality can help support global nutritional needs, with a focus on addressing malnourishment, supporting the dietary needs of vulnerable populations, and to provide an opportunity for scientists and stakeholders to discuss advances relating to protein quality in human nutrition.
