Nikkie van der Wielen is an assistant professor in the Animal Nutrition Group and researcher in the Division of Human Nutrition and Health of Wageningen University, The Netherlands. Her research focuses on the fate of proteins in the gastrointestinal tract, particularly protein digestibility measurements. She executes studies in pigs, as a model for the human gastrointestinal tract, to evaluate amino acid digestibility and protein quality of foods and ingredients. In addition, she has expertise in digestibility measurements in humans with the use of stable isotope techniques or ileostoma patients. She is currently investigating the effects of aging on digestion in older adults.
