Jennifer C. Onuora is a doctoral candidate in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and a trainee at the Centre for Global Child Health, Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). She holds an MSc in Medical Sciences from Newcastle University (UK) and a BSc in Biotechnology from Ebonyi State University (Nigeria). Her PhD research, funded through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s SEPSiS Project, investigates the development of the early infant microbiome in Bangladesh. Using data from both an observational cohort and a randomized probiotic trial, she applies multi-omics approaches to study infant microbiome development from birth to six months, focusing on how maternal and infant factors shape this process. Her work also investigates maternal-to-infant microbiome transmission and assesses the impact of a Lactiplantibacillus-based probiotic on the infant gut microbiome. The overarching goal of her PhD research is to enhance our understanding of the infant microbiome in low- and middle-income settings and assess the potential benefits of neonatal probiotic intervention.
