Dr. Catia Martins is a RD by training and an Associate Professor of Nutrition and Metabolism at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
With over 15 years of research and teaching experience, Dr. Martins has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications describing how weight loss induced by diet, exercise, and bariatric surgery impact on energy metabolism and appetite control, aiming at understanding relapse in obesity management.
Her groundbreaking research on metabolic adaptation has shown that this phenomenon is depended on the energy balance state of the individual when measurements are taken and likely contributes to resistance to weight loss, but not to weight regain.
Dr. Martins has also shown that the increase in the drive to eat seen with weight loss is absent when an individual is ketotic and that the macronutrient composition of the diet, in particular its carbohydrate content, impacts energy expenditure during weight loss.
