Professor Karim Premji Manji is the Professor of Pediatrics, at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. Tanzania, where he joined as Lecturer since 1992.
He holds an MBBS degree from MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, India (1981-1987) and; MMED (Pediatrics) at MUCHS, University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. (1988-1991); Neonatal Fellowship. Hammersmith Hospital, RPMS, London, UK (1993-1994); and master’s in public health, HSPH, Harvard University, USA (2002-2003). He has presented 3 Professorial Lectures including one on Autism in Tanzania and has over 275 publications to his credit.
He is a Fellow of the Tanzania Academy of Sciences (2012), the Royal College of Physicians (London 2017), and the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health (London 2018). He received the NIMR Best Health Research Scientist in Tanzania, 2016 Award and the International Excellence in Patient Care Award (RCP-London) in May 2019. He is the architect of newborn care in Tanzania, a founder of the rare disease foundation in Tanzania, and Advisory Board Chair of Tanzania Human Genetics Organization. His interests include neonatal medicine, nutrition, infectious disease, and neurodevelopment in children, including Autism. He has undertaken previous research on Breast Feeding and MTCT and Nevirapine (HPTN 046), the Trial of Vitamins in HIV pregnant women (TOV), Multiple Micronutrient(MMN) supplementation in Children born to HIV positive mothers(Child 1) , MMN and Zinc in Children (Child2) , Trial of Vitamin D in HIV positive pregnant women (TOV5) , Zinc dosage and Diarrhoea(ZTDT), Antibiotic in Severe Diarrhoea(ABCD). He is currently undertaking 3 RCTs on Low Birth weight feeding, Nutritional intervention in Moderately Malnourished children below 24 months, the use of Lung Ultrasound in the diagnosis of Childhood Pneumonia (ToolCAP) and Zinc supplementation in Neonatal Sepsis. His other research involved the cohort study of EN BIRTH and School Readiness (EN REACH), Low Birth Weight Infant Feeding Exploration (LIFE), Long term Neurodevelopment among the children given MMN and use of AI tool for detection of dehydration ( External validation Study) . He is involved in various technical working groups Nationally and with WHO such as Early Child Development, Management of Preterm and Low Birth Weight, and clinical instructor in the NEST360. He provides clinical service and teaching all the while. He is now the Professor Emeritus at MUHAS and is a recipient of the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health Alumni Merit Award 2024. He also received the Commission of Science, Ministry of Education 2024 Award for high scientific contributions I n Tanzania.
