Dr. Islam embarked on his academic journey in 2018 when he joined the Department of Nutritional Sciences as a graduate student. His doctoral research delved into the protective effects of curcumin, a compound found in food spice, against HFD-induced obesity, utilizing the B6 mouse model. His research findings have been disseminated through multiple research and review papers in peer-reviewed journals such as Advances in Nutrition, Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, and the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. Throughout his graduate studies, Dr. Islam received numerous accolades, including scholarships, research support funding, and recognition as the student of the month. His outstanding contributions earned him nominations for student leader awards from both the Department of Nutritional Sciences and the Graduate School of TTU. Notably, the American Society of Nutrition (ASN) acknowledged Dr. Islam as one of the top 10% of emerging leaders in the field of nutrition and metabolism, following his poster presentation at the Nutrition 2019 conference.
Dr. Islam's research journey also took him to Juntendo University and Yakult Central Research Institute in Tokyo, Japan, where he enhanced his expertise in microbiome research during his tenure as a research fellow between 2017 and 2018. Before his academic pursuits, Dr. Islam cultivated his research interests through roles in pharmaceutical companies, focusing on the research and development of biosimilars, including insulin, interferon, and filgrastim. In 2010, Dr. Islam earned his B.S. in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering from Khulna University, Bangladesh. His undergraduate degree was marked by several research articles on probiotic bacteria.
