This program will review the most recent scientific knowledge about how diet and nutritional factors impact the gut microbiome and affect health outcomes. Dietary ingredients including pre-, pro-, syn- and post-biotics (collectively known as ‘biotics’) are becoming more recognized by consumers but until recently a clear scientific consensus on how these ingredients are defined has been lacking. In addition, there is a need to define best practices for clinical research examining health benefits and to standardize methods and reporting. Finally, the most recent understanding of the health benefits of biotic ingredients will be reviewed including emerging benefits with emphasis on digestive health, metabolism and the gut-brain axis.
