Dr. Yvonne T. Maddox, Ph.D is President and CEO of the T.A. Thornton Foundation, a family foundation established to improve opportunities for disadvantaged students and communities. The foundation promotes and supports new avenues to nutrition education and for building a stronger workforce of nutrition leaders. Dr. Maddox has previously served in many academic and Federal government positions, including Vice President for Research and Professor of Allied Health Sciences, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), DoD; Deputy Director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), Acting Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) and Acting Prinicpal Deputy Director, National Institutes of Health (NIH), HHS. Her accomplishments include: establishing and directing several highly recognized NIH programs (Back to Sleep, now Safe to Sleep to reduce infant mortality; NIH Down Syndrome Consortium; Well Prepared and Fit for Life childhood obesity reduction programs) and other federal/private partnership, numerous reseach and public policy publications, and memberships on advisory boards and committees (including the Food is Medicine Institute Advisory Board, Tufts University). Dr. Maddox has received many honors and awards, including the U. S. Presidential Distinquished Executive Rank Award (the highest honor for a career civil servant), U.S. Presidential Meritorious Rank Award, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Career Achievement Award, Public Health Service Award, HHS Secretary's Award, NIH Director's Award (including one that bears her name) and several honorary degrees. She received her Ph.D in physiology from Georgetown University, studied as a Visiting Scientist at the French Atomic Energy Commission, and is a graduate of the Senior Managers in Government Program at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
