Verónica Sambra Vásquez, a dietitian from Chile, is currently pursuing a PhD in Nutrition at Indiana University Bloomington. Her research focuses on improving metabolic health through nutrition interventions, with a particular interest in the impact of non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) on glycemic control and appetite regulation in individuals with type 1 diabetes. She served as the principal investigator for the study she is presenting, which was originally conducted at the University of Chile and later validated with biostatistical and academic support at Indiana University. The study found that breakfasts containing NNS led to higher postprandial blood glucose levels and reduced satiety, underscoring the need for further investigation into the hormonal mechanisms underlying these effects. Verónica is committed to advancing practice-based, evidence-driven research to inform clinical nutrition and public health policies. Her career objectives include identifying sustainable alternatives to sugar and NNS that support metabolic health, particularly for individuals affected by or at risk for diabetes and obesity. She is competing in the Clinical Emerging Leaders Award to share these important findings with stakeholders in clinical nutrition both in the U.S. and globally.
