Professor Arne Astrup, MD, DMSc, is the Senior Vice President at the Novo Nordisk Foundation in Denmark and the leader of the Department of Obesity and Nutritional Sciences.

With a distinguished career in academia and research, he has been a full professor since 1990 and served as the Head of the Department of Nutrition, Exercise, and Sports at the University of Copenhagen from 2012 to 2020. Under his leadership, the department achieved the number one ranking in the internationally recognized Shanghai Ranking of Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments.

Dr. Astrup is a past President of the World Obesity Federation and the founding editor-in-chief of Obesity Reviews. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. His scientific interests include appetite regulation, the treatment of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Notably, in 1996, he and Professor Jens Holst discovered that GLP-1 is a satiety hormone in humans. Additionally, Astrup played a pivotal role in the 2004 prohibition of industrially produced trans fats in foods in Denmark.

A prolific author, Professor Astrup frequently publishes in prestigious journals such as BMJ, Lancet, Nature, and the New England Journal of Medicine. He has published more than 1,500 peer-reviewed papers and over 1,000 other academic publications. In 2018, Clarivate's Web of Science named him one of the most cited researchers in the world. His current H-index is 113, and his Google Scholar H-index is 157, with 126,000 citations. He has supervised 48 PhD students to date.

Professor Astrup's contributions have been recognized with numerous Honors, including being created Knight of the Order of Dannebrog in 1999 and Knight of the First Order of Dannebrog in 2012 by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. He received the International Association for the Study of Obesity's Willendorf Award in 2014 and the George Bray Outstanding Scientific Achievements Award in Obesity Research from The American Society for Nutrition in 2024.
