Dr. Amal Mitra is an internationally recognized scientist with expertise in medicine and public health. As the current Chair and Professor of the Department of Public Health at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center's Julia Jones Matthews School of Population and Public Health, he brings extensive leadership experience to his role. Dr. Mitra pioneered the Master's program in epidemiology and biostatistics at The University of Southern Mississippi (1998), served as Founding Program Director of Public Health in Kuwait University's Faculty of Medicine (2013-2016), and directed Global Health Program Initiatives at Jackson State University (2017-2024).
His collaborative research spans institutions across Bangladesh, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Kuwait, Malaysia, and Nepal. Dr. Mitra's distinguished career includes numerous accolades, notably the 2024 John Snow Award from the American Public Health Association Epidemiology Section, the 2022-2023 Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Award, and the 2007 Fulbright Scholar Grant. He has authored two influential books: Statistical Approaches for Epidemiology: From Concept to Application (Springer, 2024) and Epidemiology for Dummies (John Wiley & Sons, 2023).
