Assistant Professor
University of Florida
Dominick Lemas is an assistant professor in the Department of Health Outcomes & Biomedical Informatics at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Lemas earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Vermont in 2006. Dominick completed his PhD in biochemistry & molecular biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2012, followed by postdoctoral training in computational biology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in 2015. Dr. Lemas’s research utilizes precision health tools and biomedical informatics to examine how early-life exposures, particularly breastfeeding and obesity, impact maternal and child health outcomes. His team combines clinical research expertise with advanced computational techniques in metabolomics and microbiome analysis, with a significant focus on developing reproducible, high-throughput workflows. Central to Dr. Lemas’s work in metabolomics is identifying bioactive compounds in human milk that influence infant microbiome stability and growth patterns. Long-term, his goal is to develop accessible, low-cost therapeutics that reduce disease risk transmission from mothers to children. Dr. Lemas actively leads projects leveraging large-scale electronic health records through his role with the OneFlorida+ Clinical Research Consortium, employing machine learning and natural language processing to improve maternal-infant health outcomes. He currently contributes to several NIH-funded studies exploring pediatric obesity, microbiome-host interactions, and chronic kidney disease in pediatric populations. Recognized for his commitment to mentorship and teaching, Dr. Lemas was named a "Champion of Undergraduate Research" and an "Exemplary Teacher" by the University of Florida. In his personal time, Dominick enjoys skiing, swimming, hiking, and mountain biking.
