Objectives: Recently, eating behaviors such as preference for convenience foods or delivery/packaged foods, have changed. This study aimed to evaluate sodium intake level of Korean according to the eating behaviors.

Methods: This study was conducted on 31,789 people who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Survey (2018 to 2022). We analyzed and evaluated sodium intake and eating habits, including the main food source and intake route.

Results: The sodium intake level of Korean was decreased continuously from 2018 to 2022 (2018, 3,274.1 mg/day → 2020, 3,220.3 mg/day → 2022, 3,073.7 mg/day). However, the sodium intake level in 2022 was still 1.5 times higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended level (2,000 mg). When analyzed by meal location, it was highest at home (1,962.0 mg/day), followed by restaurants (630.5 mg/day) and schools/workplaces (427.1 mg/day), which reflects the lifestyle during the COVID-19 period. The ratio of sodium intake by intake route within home was highest from the food cooked at home (66.7%), followed by delivery/packaged food (13.0%), ready to cook food (12.5%), and instant food (7.6%). In particular, sodium intake from the delivery/packaged food consumed at home in 2022 (254.9 mg/day) has increased significantly compared to 2018 (165.8 mg/day), which seems to be due to changes in eating habits caused by COVID-19. The main sources of home delivery or packaged food were fried chicken (19.9 mg/day), Tteokbokki (16.2 mg/day), and hamburgers (12.4 mg/day).

Conclusions: The results of this study can be used as basic data for dietary and nutritional policies for the proper sodium intake.
