(P11-033-25) Efficacy of a Functional Food Supplement With Grape, Soy Protein, and Edamame as an Adjuvant Treatment in the Management of Patients With Hepatitis B
RAAS Nutritionals Santa Susana, California, United States
Objectives: To prove the efficacy of a functional food supplement containing grape product, soy protein concentrate, organic edamame powder, and soy isoflavones in the management of patients with Hepatitis B.
Methods: This is the report of an open-label trial of 64 volunteers with the diagnosis of chronic Hepatitis B. After signing an informed consent, every patient received a proprietary blend of soy protein powder, edamame protein powder, grape protein powder and dealcoholized wine grape juice for 90 days and were controlled periodically with blood tests.
Results: 53 patients (82.5%) showed a reduction of the viral load, 40 (63%) down to non-detectable levels (p=.03) and 13 (20%) down to an average of 148 IU/mL (p=.04). 24 patients (37.5%) didn’t have any underlying disease, but the other patients had diabetes (20%), cancer (7.5%) and other previous conditions like chronic kidney disease, hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerosis or thrombosis (32%). On average, patients had a reduction of AST of 73% down to an average normal value of 21.5 U/L (p=.005), ALT reduction of 62% to an average of 28.2 U/L (p=.02). Total bilirubin levels didn’t change significantly. There was an average cholesterol levels reduction of 20% (p=.05), HDL increase of 22% (p=.03), LDL decrease of 20% (p=.05), VLDL decrease of 44% (p=.01) and an average decrease of 36% (p < .02) by day 90.
Conclusions: The functional food supplement tested helped satisfactorily in the metabolic control of patients with chronic Hepatitis B, improving most liver function tests.
